Bill Jacklin
(born 1943)

Jacklin was born in London and worked as a graphic designer before returning to college to study painting, first at Walthamstow, and then at the Royal College of Art. His reputation was founded in the early 1970s when his work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC. Jacklin's work underwent a number of changes, but it was always based on a preoccupation with geometry and light. Environmental, Pop, and Minimalism claimed him for a time before he began again to work representationally, winning wide acclaim for his American townscapes, which showcased his strong draftsmanship. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991. He lives in New York City, where he moved in 1986. A monograph on his life and career was published by Phaidon in 1997. His work is held in countless public, corporate, and private collections in America and Europe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York City.
