Sarah Raphael
(1960-2001)

Like her artistic forbears Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable, Sarah Raphael was born in Suffolk, England. She studied at the Camberwell School of Art, where she won first-class honors. One of the most written-about British female artists of her generation, Raphael rose to prominence in the 1990s with a series of exhibitions at Agnew’s and Marlborough in London. Her work evolved throughout the decade, from the exquisitely painted portraits of the early 90s to the mysterious aerial Australian landscapes of mid-90s to the whimsical etchings that she undertook at the end of her life. She died unexpectedly in hosptial on 10 January 2001. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
