Study of a relief representing Seti I making ritual offerings to Osiris in the Temple of Seti I, Abydos

Pencil and watercolor
6-3/4 x 13-7/8 inches
Inscribed: Abydos Egypt. 25 March 1874 Sethi I/ Two figures to right advanced to indication of the foot of Osiris
The drawing records a painted relief in the temple of Seti I (1294-1279 BCE) at Abydos. It depicts the King offering a ritual gold collar and pectoral to Osiris, who holds a crook and flail, symbols of the god’s kingship in the underworld. Behind Osiris stands Isis, wearing a crown of the sun disc between cow’s horns, stretching out her wings to protect him. Above the figure of the King, his praenomen “Men-Maat-Re” is written in a cartouche. On the far left, Seti I makes an offering of cloth to Osiris.
